California faces a crisis in the insurance market that is hurting real people. I'm ready to make the Insurance Commissioner's office what it's supposed to be—a powerful force that holds insurance companies accountable and protects consumers. During my decade in the State Legislature, I've never been afraid to take on corporate special interests—from the insurance industry to Big Oil, healthcare companies, big tech, and the NRA—to protect our communities, environment, and consumers. I've offered serious solutions for the insurance crisis, like creating a new wildfire insurance authority, modeled on California's Earthquake Authority, to reduce costs and create stability in the market. I authored legislation to guarantee wildfire insurance to homeowners who harden their homes against wildfires, so insurance companies can no longer turn away thousands of Californians. My ethics plan will ensure that when I'm Insurance Commissioner, both insurance companies and my office conduct business in the light of day. I'll force insurance companies to be transparent about their contribution to climate change. I'll create a consumer's bill of rights to protect the right to healthcare for all. My child has epilepsy and my father has Parkinson's, so healthcare is personal to me. I'm proud to be endorsed by the California Nurses Association. We need a new approach: hold insurance companies accountable, no conflicts of interest, and only the highest ethical standards. As your Insurance Commissioner, protecting consumers is my top priority. Whether I'm standing up for wildfire survivors or helping Californians get back their money when insurance companies overcharged during the pandemic, I believe consumers need someone on their side. That's why I'm holding insurers accountable and ensuring a fair and competitive marketplace to drive down prices. I've personally met with thousands of people in dozens of counties impacted by wildfires to hear directly from survivors. As a result, I'm taking executive action to require insurance discounts for safer homes and sponsored legislation to streamline the process for survivors to receive benefits. These actions have preserved insurance for more than 3 million Californians. During the worst of the pandemic, California drivers were paying full price for auto insurance even though they weren't on the roads. That's why I directed insurance companies to provide premium relief, saving California drivers more than $2 billion. I'm also a champion for access to quality health care—advocating for new, innovative ideas, like the Parent Healthcare Act to allow policyholders to include elderly parents on their health plans.
