With California facing multiple emergencies from wildfires, Covid and the dual homeless and housing crisis, I went to the U.S. Senate to fight for California. Just days into office, l got to work to pass the American Rescue Plan, the historic Covid relief package that brought home critical funding for vaccines, support for small businesses, resources for schools to reopen safely, and direct assistance checks to families. I also secured over a billion dollars to help address homelessness and housing affordability in California. I also fought to make sure the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act included my legislation and priorities: strengthening the electric grid, mitigating the threat of wildfires, electrifying school buses to reduce carbon emissions, and improving access to clean water. Now that President Biden has signed it into law, it's bringing billions more dollars to California—not just by fixing roads and bridges, but also creating good-paying jobs here at home. But the work is not over. I'm working to undo the filibuster, an outdated Senate rule that has created partisan gridlock and is keeping the Senate from making more progress for the American people. As the first Latino to represent California in the U.S. Senate, I will never forget where I came from. I'm the proud son of immigrants and a proud son of California.
